When is the best time to visit the Maldives?

The Maldives is warm all year. The drier northeast monsoon runs roughly from December to April; the wetter southwest monsoon from about May to November, when rates are often lower.

Temperatures in the Maldives stay close to 30°C all year, so the main difference between seasons is rain, wind and price.

December to April: dry season

This is the peak season, with calmer seas and more sunshine. Christmas, New Year and Easter are the busiest and most expensive dates; resorts often set minimum stays and stricter cancellation terms then.

May to November: wet season

Expect more showers and wind, usually in short bursts. Rates are often lower, and this is the season for manta rays at Hanifaru Bay in Baa Atoll and for surfing in North Malé and Thaa.

Our advice

  • Book peak dates early; the best villas sell out first.
  • For diving, ask us which atoll suits the month you are travelling.
  • Travel insurance is strongly recommended in any season.
